Sultanate Council Urges Muslims To Look Out For New Moon

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar has called on the Muslims in the country to start looking for the new Moon of Shaa’ban tomorrow Wednesday the 29th of January 2025,equivalent to Islamic calendar 29th of Rajab 1446AH .

The crescent moon of Sha’ban is expected to form after the sun and moon meet at 4:46 PM on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The moon may be visible on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025, the beginning of Sha’ban is expected to be on Friday, January 31, 2025.

In Islam, the sighting of the new crescent moon marks the beginning of a lunar month. This is done by observing the moon, which is called moon sighting.

In a statement signed by the chairman Advisory Committee on Islamic Religious Affairs Sultanate Council Sokoto state, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu,Wazirin Sokoto says if sighted, the information should be forwarded to the nearest district or village head for onward commutation to the Sultan.

The statement cited that the Monthly Observation of the moon, clarifies the Islamic Calendar within a given year, thereby making the month of Ramadan moon sightings more acceptable to the general Muslims in the Country.
