Nigeria, UNESCO To establish International Media and Information Literacy Institute

The Federal Government in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is to establish International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Nigeria.

Receiving the UNESCO Feasibility Team who was in Nigeria to assess the National Open University of Nigeria’s facilities for the establishment of UNESCO Category 2 in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation Mr. Mohammed Idriss said this became necessary to foster global collaboration in combating fake news.

Mr Idriss while highlighting the dangers of fake news and misinformation said to address the problem which not peculiar to Nigeria requires global collaboration through organizations for proper orientation

The Minister stressed that the present administration had shown commitment to ensure media freedom and funding for the institute.

Earlier the Head of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Mr. Nelson Papi- Kolliessiah explained that the delegation was in the country to ensure that what had been reflected in the proposal was reality on ground.

He expressed satisfaction that assessment so far indicated Nigeria’s readiness for the take off of the institute.
