Tinubu Distributes Palliatives to SUG Presidents Across Nigeria

In a move underscoring his administration’s dedication to student welfare, President Bola Tinubu has distributed palliative support to Student Union Government (SUG) Presidents from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The event, held in Abuja, was facilitated by Asefon Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Students Engagement.

Asefon described the initiative as part of President Tinubu’s broader efforts to address student needs and promote engagement between the government and academic institutions. He noted that this gesture builds on similar support provided during the festive season in December 2024, when student leaders also received palliatives.

According to Asefon, the rice initially earmarked for December distribution was delayed, arriving in Abuja on December 28. To ensure fairness and transparency, representatives from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones were invited to participate in the process. Two SUG Presidents from each zone were selected to oversee the equitable distribution of the items.

“This initiative is unprecedented,” Asefon stated. “For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a sitting President is engaging student leaders directly with tangible support during the festive season.”

He also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to prioritizing student interests, urging continued dialogue and participation.

“The time has come for Nigerian students to reflect and make their voices heard. The impact of this administration is evident, and we are focused on sustaining these efforts to support education and student welfare,” Asefon added.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of student leaders nationwide, Fahad Abdullahi, SUG President of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, praised the initiative.

“This is a commendable act of leadership from President Tinubu,” Abdullahi said. “From the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to this rice distribution, it is clear that students remain a priority for this administration.”

The palliative effort marks a renewed emphasis on student welfare amid broader social reforms under Tinubu’s leadership.
